How to remove wine stains from a fabric sofa

A fresh red wine stain on your sofa can look like a disaster, but on most fabrics it can be treated at home if you act within the first few minutes.

First steps, before it dries

Blot the excess liquid with a clean, absorbent cloth, pressing from the outside toward the center of the stain without rubbing. Rubbing only pushes the wine deeper into the fibers.

A home treatment for sturdy fabrics

Mix warm water with a little neutral soap and apply with a damp cloth, repeating the blotting process until the stain starts to fade. On delicate fabrics or stains that have already dried, this method may not be enough.

When to call a professional

If the stain is more than a day old, has already been rubbed in, or the sofa is a delicate fabric (linen, velvet, light microfiber), a professional hot-water extraction clean is the safest option — it lifts the stain deep in the fibers without damaging the upholstery.
